The album sounds like a stylish film score of a western ,blending vintage and modernity, full of energy. Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies mixes the mythic cinematic soundscapes with catchy ,rockabilly , metal and hard rock sounds, in a unique style. The fictional and real life characters come to life in your head. Lyrics for different characters fit to perfection with the music , both evocative and very imaginative. You can see the notorious exotic dancer, Lola Montez and her famous erotic Spider Dance alongside Pearl Hart, the outlaw of the American Old West and Doc Holliday who sympathized with Wyatt Earp gang. There is also the personal Cape of Our Hero.
Musically speaking, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies delivers hooks upon hooks. This is nothing than a festival of rich textures, infectious riffs, anthemic melodies , haunting vocals, killer harmonic solos alongside well-written lyrics, by a talented trio complimented now with Rob Caggiano, the perfect fit for them.
Volbeat marry their outstanding massive sense of melodies in a new fresh and incredible musical journey that leaves the listeners speechless. Other highlights from the album is the groundbreaking variety of guitar work. The riffs are extremely catchy. The album displays such a harmonious set of riffs and solos that would make you think than Rob Caggiano and Michael Poulsen play together for a long time. Volbeat new songs contain many superb guitar harmonies executed with precision. Many killer moments, brilliantly played for our great bliss for example on Black Bart, The Sinner Is You or Our Loved Ones.
The album begins with an engaging evocative intro track featuring harmonica from famous blues harp player Paul Lamb that prepares you for what’s coming. The Lady Pearl Hart and Lola Montez reminds you of a soaring 50 s rock & Roll. Dead But Rising takes you on a melodic heavy metal journey featuring an impeccable riffage work. Ecotone and Black Bart are inventive mixtures of thrash metal , hard rock and western sounds. They bring another energy to My Body, a cover of hit song by US Pop-punk Young the Giant. The Handman’s Body Count is one of most addictive tracks from this album. The anthemic Lonesome Rider feat. Sarah Blackwood (Walk off the Earth) is a modern Johnny Cash with a rockabilly feeling. The track Room 24 features King Diamond, the frontman of Danish metal pioneers Mercyful Fate, one of Michael Poulsen’s musical idols. Nothing resists to Volbeat who experiments with success, the ballads with , the very beautiful Our Loved ones and my first favorite on this album. It is also a potential hit song, which, I hope, will be a single for this summer.
All in all, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies is easily their best Album so far. The addition of Rob Caggiano is a great idea. He brings a new force to go ahead.
